The number of children who, upon hearing that I am unwed, have instructed me to literally grab a random woman off the street and marry her, is frankly disturbing.
I'm married and got married young, and the number of children who told me the opposite is also disturbing. My favourite was a child who told me "you should have tried lots of people first or you'll end up with someone who eats crayons."
Yeah, I'm also not interested in ever getting married (not even interested in dating) and the socialization really sticks with you even as an adult. I live in a really liberal area with really mellow parents, and even though no one around me ever suggests or even implies that I shouldn't be single, I still get kind of insecure about it sometimes like I'm failing at something I was supposed to do.
Thank god for all those Miss Marple novels I had growing up. There's not a lot of other happily single older person role models I can think of in pop culture.
Getting married has been held up as a required adult milestone (along with getting a car and a house and also kids), so it's not surprising that even in the most supportive of settings, doubt still hangs around.
...And now I need to get my aunt's Miss Marple novels off my shelf and finally give them a read.
